Weather Scuppers Solent Swim

Sunday's planned Solent Swim organised by Hampshire Police and involving members of Farnham Triathlon Club was unfortunately cancelled due to poor conditions.

From Steve Wallace:

Not surprisingly the Solent Swim was cancelled due to the Force 6 to 8 weather!

Undeterred an approx. one mile shore swim was arranged, which was still a challenge in very rough swell!

Tom Holmes 33.58
Debbie Shaw 37.04
Steve Wallace 39.00

Overall 23 swimmers completed the swim with about £4500 raised for the KIDS and GAFIRS (Rescue Services) charities.

It will be attempted again next year!

Lucy Chittenden races elite

Congratulations to Lucy Chittenden who competed in her first elite draft-legal race in the first round of the Corus Elite Series at GreenPark in Reading. Racing against the likes of Olympians Andrea Whitcombe and Flora Duffy, Lucy finished 10th overall in the ladies race. Here's how Lucy summed up the experience.

Came out of the swim with my goggles filled with water from the fight at the start of the race came out of the swim in 20th place and just missed the lead bunch on the bike. Worked very hard with another girl and was catching the bunch up. Came off the bike with the back of the bunch in 13th place and had very good transitions. Ran off the bike to overtake some more people in front of me and managed to get in the prize money and finished in 10th place. It was the hardest race I have done but the most rewarding one too.

We look forward to further success for Lucy in the elite ranks. 2012 perhaps?

Ian Howard's Trans Alpine Triathlon

At the beginning of July, Ian will set off on a 2,000 mile triathlon across the Alps, from the French Riviera to Slovenia to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Ian will cycle or run over the highest asphalted passes in each country and swim in any lakes along the way. Ian's wife Judith, and Rosie (a black labrador), comprise the support crew. They have bought a camper van to live in. Friends are welcome to join Ian for various stages of the route. They hope to be back at the end of August.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes has sent a message of support: "Marie Curie Cancer Care provides nursing care to cancer patients around the country making life more comfortable for patients in their last days and providing valuable support for their families. Please support Ian in his ambitious attempt to traverse the Alps from end to end in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. To cover over 2,000 miles, taking in the very highest roads of the Alps, without using mechanical transport, is a considerable challenge and I send him and Judith my best wishes for a successful undertaking."

Every penny raised will go towards Marie Curie Cancer Care.

You will be able to follow Ian's progress on this website here.

You can sponsor Ian and help raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care here.

Ironman Training Weekend Done and Dusted

Well done to everyone who took part in the Ironman Training Weekend. Thanks to all those who gave up their time to help out with timekeeping, marshalling and supporting and thanks to Allie Richardson for taking on the organisation. The weekend appears to have been a success despite the atrocious conditions which caused the curtailment of Saturday's bike ride. Hopefully everyone achieved their personal goals.

Results (times) have been posted on the Ironman Training Weekend page here.

Ironman Training Weekend

Preparations are under way for the Farnham Triathlon Club Ironman Training Weekend which will take place on the weekend of 28th, 29th and 30th March.
For those that have not participated in this before, we hold an Ironman training weekend with the swim taking place on the Friday evening at the usual swim time, the cycle taking place on Saturday morning along the A31 and the run taking place along the Basingstoke canal footpath starting at the wharf by the Barley Mow in Dogmersfield on Sunday morning.
Participants elect to either do the half or full Ironman distance and you can mix and match on all three disciplines (for example you can choose to swim the half distance, cycle the full distance and run the half or if you prefer just choose one of the three to complete at either distance).
Although it is important to emphasise that this is not a race, times and splits will be recorded to give participants an indication of how they might fare over the full or half Ironman distances. Photographs and 'results' from previous years are available, together with details of this year's event, on the Ironman Training Weekend page.
In order to organise this we need to know how many people want to take part in each discipline and which distances so please let Allie Richardson know your name and choices as soon as possible.
We also need marshals to help with the timing and safety of this event – please let Allie know if you are able to help.
